DN15 Turbine Flow Meter — LPG, Diesel and Gasoline Service with Gerkon Electronics

A DN15 turbine flow meter for installation in LPG dispensers at autogas refuelling stations and fuel dispensers at filling stations. The unit measures volumetric throughput of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, propane-butane), diesel fuel, gasoline and other low-viscosity petroleum products. Additional applications include oil-depot process piping, LPG bottling plants and dosing installations for in-house fuel consumers. The use case is primarily custody transfer measurement (commercial billing of dispensed product) and internal process metering.

Compatible with all dispenser brands sold in Ukraine

The standard square-wave 50/50 pulse output (NPN/PNP) is the universal interface accepted by every fuel-dispenser and LPG-dispenser controller on the Ukrainian market. The meter connects directly — no signal converter required — to dispensers built on the following platforms:

  • Gerkon — in-house production by NVF GERKON LLC (1- to 10-hose configurations)
  • Bennett-platform (T-75 / U101-A / U102-A) — both original Bennett units and Asian dispensers built on this platform
  • Tatsuno — BMP series and newer models
  • Wayne / Wayne-Dresser — legacy fuel dispensers with pulse input
  • FAS (Fuel Automation Systems), Adast, Petrotec and other European brands with fuel-dispenser pulse input
  • LPG dispensers for autogas service — virtually all market models, since LPG-dispenser controllers expect a standard 50/50 pulse
  • Tanker trucks and mobile fuel skids with electronic accounting based on a pulse sensor

The output K-factor is configurable via web interface to match any controller's expected range (typically 10 to 125 pulses/L). If you have a non-standard dispenser with a special pulse protocol — contact Gerkon engineers; we will provide written compatibility confirmation for your specific specification.

Operating principle: classical axial turbine flow meter. The fluid stream rotates a low-mass turbine wheel suspended concentrically within the meter body. The rotation rate is directly proportional to the mean fluid velocity, hence to the volumetric flow rate. Each rotation generates a defined number of electrical pulses via an embedded magnetic pickup — the meter's K-factor (pulses per litre). Baseline accuracy is ±1.0—1.5% at factory K-factor; ±0.5% after multi-point calibration against a certified reference, calibrated by Gerkon for the target fuel type (calibration points typically at 10%, 20%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 100% of Qmax).

The unit is a hybrid build: an industrial turbine assembly with SUS304/SUS316 stainless-steel wetted parts (resistant to propane-butane, ethanol-blended gasolines and biodiesel), tungsten-carbide bearing and SUS316L shaft, paired with the Gerkon Smart Flow Counter v2.1 electronics board — designed and manufactured in Ukraine. The amplifier head is in an explosion-proof enclosure, suitable for ATEX-zoned LPG environments (case-by-case confirmation per project). Where conventional market models use simple frequency-conversion electronics, the v2.1 board adds Wi-Fi, a three-language web interface, telemetry to the azs.gerkon.com cloud service and verification-grade metrological algorithms.

Inside the Gerkon Smart Flow Counter v2.1 board

Adaptive transient-process filter

Classic turbine-meter problem: at refuelling start, the rotor spins up from 0 to working RPM in 1-3 seconds; at stop, it spins down. If you measure all of this as "useful flow," you get a systematic accounting error. The firmware locks in a reference frequency after stabilisation, then dynamically sets a threshold at 80% of the reference. Anything below — rejected as transient. Result: volume is counted only when the turbine runs stably, without spin-up/spin-down artefacts.

Multi-point millilitre-precision calibration

Standard turbine calibration uses a single K-factor for the entire flow range, giving typical accuracy of ±1—1.5%. Gerkon's approach: up to 8 calibration points, each setting an error correction in millilitres for a specific flow rate. Linear interpolation between points. This achieves ±0.5% across the entire working range for the specific fuel type (gasoline, diesel, LPG — separate calibration for each).

Fast 200 ms measurement window

Older turbine meters counted pulses over a 1000 ms window — slow flow-change response time. Reduced to 200 ms — 5× faster. The user sees instantaneous flow response when opening/closing the dispenser nozzle.

Automatic verification mode

Previously, verification required manually pressing "Start," running the dispense, then "Stop." Now: press "Verification" → the device self-starts when pulses appear, self-stops when flow drops. Routine fuel-dispenser verification time drops from 5-7 minutes per dispenser to 1-2 minutes.

Cloud telemetry via azs.gerkon.com

All data on flow rate, daily volume and temperature is automatically transmitted via Wi-Fi to the azs.gerkon.com server in MQTT (low-latency, real-time cabinet updates) or HTTP. The web cabinet provides: current flow rate in real time, reports per day/week/month, anomaly detection (shortfalls, overflows), remote configuration without site visits, data export for accounting.

Adaptation for petroleum and LPG service

The base SUS304/SUS316 stainless-steel construction is rated for petroleum and LPG service. Gerkon performs per-meter calibration on the target fuel, accounting for its density and viscosity. When ordering, please specify:

  • Target fuel type (LPG propane-butane mix, summer/winter diesel, gasoline RON 92/95/98)
  • Expected flow range in your pipeline (rated 0.3—3 m³/h; typical operating point near nominal)
  • Working pressure (rated max 1.6 MPa = 16 bar; for higher pressures — special-build version)
  • Seal type: NBR (default), Viton-FKM (for biofuel/ethanol/aromatic solvents)

Installation and operation

The meter installs in a horizontal pipeline section after a 70 µm mechanical filter and with straight pipe runs of at least 5 pipe diameters upstream and 3 diameters downstream (for flow stabilisation). Threaded connection: G1 = 3/4″ on the meter body, G2 = 1/2″ on the mounting fittings (included).

The Smart Flow Counter v2.1 electronics are mounted on a board inside the device housing. Connection: +5—28 V DC power, square-wave pulse output (50/50 duty cycle, NPN/PNP — configurable), Wi-Fi antenna. Configuration via web interface — connect from your phone to the Wi-Fi access point Counter_XXXX (password on housing label), open a browser to 192.168.4.1.
